Claudio Garrido Melo currently serves as the Deputy Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations. Garrido's career reflects a commitment to public service through diplomacy. He started his career with the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1998 as a Third Secretary in the General Directorate of Ceremonial and Protocol. His career has included postings in embassies and consulates around the world including serving as Counselor at the Consulate General of Chile in Shanghai from September 2020 to July 2022.
Garrido has a Bachelor of Arts in History from the Catholic University of Chile. He also earned a Master of Arts in International Studies with a focus on Contemporary Asia Pacific from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. He received the University of Birmingham International Student Scholarship for his studies there in 2005. In addition, Garrido participated in the Japanese-Language Program for Foreign Service Officers at the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institute in Osaka, Japan, from October 1999 to June 2000. He received a scholarship from the Japan Foundation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for this program.
