Richard Jackson

Richard Jackson is an internationally recognized authority on global aging and retirement policy. He is president of the Global Aging Institute (GAI), a nonprofit research and educational organization he founded in 2014 that is dedicated to improving understanding of the economic, social, and geopolitical challenges created by demographic change, and especially population aging, in the United States and around the world. 

From 2003 to 2014, Richard was a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he directed a program on global aging whose cutting-edge research helped to define what is shaping up to be one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century.  From 1993 to 2003, he worked as an independent researcher, writer, and consultant on a wide range of public policy issues.  From 1988 to 1993, he was a research fellow at the Hudson Institute, where he contributed to the path-breaking Workforce 2000 Project. 

Richard is the author or co-author of numerous policy studies, including; Asian Provident Funds: Meeting Tomorrow’s Challenges (2021); Voluntary Pensions in Emerging Markets: New Strategies for Meeting the Retirement Security Challenge (2017);  Global Aging and Retirement Security in Emerging Markets: Reassessing the Role of Funded Pensions (2015); Lessons from Abroad for the U.S. Entitlement Debate (2014); The Global Aging Preparedness Index (2010); The Graying of the Great Powers: Demography and Geopolitics in the 21st Century (2008); and The Graying of the Middle Kingdom: The Demographics and Economics of Retirement Policy in China (2004). 

Richard has spoken on aging-related issues at dozens of conferences in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States and is widely quoted in the international media. He holds a B.A. from SUNY at Albany and a Ph.D. from Yale University.
