Mark Doherty graduated from Auckland Medical School in 1990, and joined GSK in 2011. In between, he has worked in biotech, public health institutes and universities in the US, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Brazil, Ethiopia and India, as well as consulting for organizations such as BARDA, WHO, MRC, Wellcome Trust and the Gates Foundation. He has held — and continues to hold — multiple professorships and editorial positions. Throughout this career, his work has focused on immune activation, and biomarkers which show the development of immune processes, and he continues to work and publish in this area. However, that has been coupled with a commitment to turning basic immunological insights into better public health, which has been reflected in work on clinical trials, product launches and public health education.
